We asked CRNA Taylor Leischman to tell us a bit about himself and his thoughts on name and role on theatre caps.
1. What is your role in the operating room?
I am a CRNA or Nurse Anesthesiologist. I primarily do OR cases, run a pre-op clinic and pain management consultations for obstetrics.
2. What do you see as the benefits of name and role on theatre caps?
I work in a few different facilities so I like the concept of people knowing my name and my role as well as the convenience of knowing others who also use theatre caps. I also have a horrible habit of forgetting people’s names, so if it’s written clearly on their theatre hats it’s much easier for me to remember names of people I’m working with.
3. Do you have any stories of name and role on theatre caps improving your workplace?
I still think the best story comes from Malcom Gladwell, who penned a chapter titled ‘The Ethnic Theory of Plane Crashes’ in his Outliers: The Story of Success.
*(It’s a great example, thanks Taylor. It explores the idea of power distance relationships in culture and how it impacts communication and error.)
4. What has the journey been like implementing name and role in your hospital?
It’s a work in progress, but one I’m passionate about.
